ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — Firefighters were called out to a fire Monday night at a place that was very familiar to them — one of their former fire stations.
The fire was reported by passersby who saw smoke coming from the former west end station on Lemarchant Road just before 6 p.m.
When firefighters arrived on scene, smoke was coming from several different areas of the station. After forcing entry to the building, they found heavy smoke on the second floor and located a fire in the kitchen area.
Platoon Chief Paul Grandy told the Telegram that the fire may have been smoldering for some time before it was noticed.
The blaze was brought under control fairly quickly but not before the upstairs suffered significant fire and smoke damage.
A section of Lemarchant Road was closed to traffic as firefighters worked at the scene.
There were no injuries and the RNC is investigating the incident.
The west end station was closed over five years ago with the opening of a new area station on Blackmarsh Road.
