Jake Smith of Dartmouth High and Abbey Baker of Halifax West were the runaway winners at the Nova Scotia School Athletic Federation golf championships on Monday at The Links at Penn Hills.

Smith shot a 65 to easily capture the boys title while Baker had a 77 to win the girls' crown.

Smith collected two eagles and three birdies on the day to finish seven strokes ahead of Logan Forward of Hants East (72) and Jack Shaw of Horton (76). His 65 established a course record from the white tees at Penn Hills.

The Grade 12 student shot 33 on the front and finished the back in 32, that included eagles on No. 11 and 16.

Smith said posting a score that low wasn’t even on his mind entering the round.

“I wasn’t expecting to play very well because I haven’t been playing very much recently,” said Smith. “So it was a bit of a surprise to shoot such a low score. Setting the course record from the whites is really cool and hopefully is the first of many."

Baker, who was recently named the Nova Scotia Golf Association's juvenile player of the year, finished ahead of Jaelyn Keiver of King's-Edgehill (85) and Katie MacIntyre of Lockview (88).
